The Changing Face of Product Certification

Architects' Datafile September 2024

The landscape of product certification in the construction industry has undergone significant change, largely driven by the post-Grenfell Hackitt Report and framed by the Building Safety Act. This shift has introduced a greater level of rigour and oversight, particularly in testing and compliance, while establishing new professional roles responsible for certifying building products. Key areas of focus include fire safety, durability, health impacts, life-cycle analysis, and embodied carbon.

This Industry Viewfinder White Paper discovered architects’ experiences and perspectives on product certification, tracking awareness of evolving processes, including the challenges they face in obtaining performance information, attitudes towards third-party testing, and the implications of the new National Construction Products Regulator and UKCA Mark.

The research highlighted concerns around the certification of safety, performance, and sustainability and revealed insights into the evolving relationship between specifiers, manufacturers, and the wider industry as they navigate stricter certification standards, build trust, and work towards best practices in construction product certification.
