On 17th June 2025, Building Insights LIVE hosted a major round table, sponsored by Amtico and Johnstone’s Trade Paints, bringing together leading specialists to examine how design and research can better support people living with dementia and other neurodiverse conditions.
With the UK population of people with dementia expected to reach one million by 2026, and many living in care facilities, architects and clients are being tasked to work more closely with providers and residents to deliver environments that are safe, supportive, and tailored to individual needs.
Attendees explored how evidence-based design is reshaping practice, from the role of colour, flooring, and layout in supporting orientation and wellbeing, to the use of research-led frameworks that improve independence and quality of life. The discussion also addressed implementation challenges – from overcoming siloed approaches within the care system to ensuring practical collaboration between designers, providers, and the supply chain – alongside the opportunities for more inclusive, standardised approaches across the sector.
With demand for inclusive care environments rapidly growing, the round table highlighted how a new “Design for Inclusivity Network” could share best practice, strengthen links between research and construction, and help embed safer, more responsive design across the industry.
